In this play’s parable of the Ten Talents, we have another case of Jesus presenting a principle of the Kingdom that might be a little repellent to some modern sensibilities. At least to certain quarters of the Church, the cruel law, “to those who have shall be given, and from those who have not will be taken away even that which they have” and the extreme fate of the “unprofitable servant”, who is tossed right out of the boundaries of the parable and directly into Hell (just as in the parable of the Wedding Feast) must strike a disturbing chord. Shouldn’t the Kingdom work in a more enlightened way? Shouldn’t there be forgiveness for the servant whose only mistake was to go too far to protect his master’s money from loss?
Apparently not.
