I wonder what the more progressive churches make of this story about Jesus’ teaching on divorce. What I tried to make of it was a good play. I hope my progressive readers won’t be upset that I didn’t allow him to rationalize his position personally. (I did have some of his disciples try, which I thought was more true to life.) I also hope my more conservative readers won’t be upset that I didn’t allow him to defend his position.
I think the Silent Jesus who issues an indefensible teaching and then sits back and lets his disciples argue it back and forth might be the ideal Jesus. He might also be Jesus.
