Only two readings into Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the momentum is already palpable. Jesus has begun his inexplicable headlong rush to an end that his disciples will see as a catastrophe, Judas is already nearly out of options, and the priests and other rulers of the city are close to a deadly consensus. As the story of Jesus careens toward what believers in him on this side of history consider a triumphant ending, I hope these plays will remind us that it can’t have felt that way to anyone involved at the time. For each of them in his or her own way, it must have seemed like everything they cared most about was now at risk due to the actions of an infuriatingly uncontrollable madman. They walked (as do we all, at all times) “a perilous road, mostly in the dark.”
