There are two parallel journeys going on in these chapters of John: as the disciples slowly and individually stumble into greater understanding of exactly what’s about to happen, Judas makes his swift way to cut his deal with the high priest. In this particular play, it’s Mary who, among the disciples, advances the furthest along the road to Golgotha, but Judas has to face an unpleasant revelation himself.
Fate is tightening its net around everybody.
